Using path analytic methods, the present study used twosocial-cognitive models of maladaptive parenting to predictendorsements of child punishment in a sample of 101young adults who had not yet become parents. Participantscompleted paper-and-pencil measures of expectations, attributions, current aggression, and responses tovignettes about child rearing and social situations. Resultssuggest that working models of parent-child relation-shipsare related in predictable ways to endorsements ofcognitive and behavioral responses toward children in vignettes, even in adults who are not yet parents. An extendedmodel of maladaptive parenting that includedbeliefs and behaviors regarding current peer relationshipswas not validated. Gender moderated the influence of pastpunishment on level of unrealistic expectations about childrenand the influence of current peer aggression on endorsementsof child punishment. Implications of genderdifferences in predictors and directions for future researchare discussed.

Key Words: maladaptive parenting • child punishment • distorted cognitions • internal working models
